Police officers found a gun in the car of a man making threats at Buller Hospital last night.
Sergeant Malcolm Lamont said the man had been behaving badly at the hospital so staff said they would call police.
The man then allegedly threatened to shoot police if they came to the hospital, Lamont said.
Two police officers who responded to a call from hospital staff first checked that staff members were safe and the man was contained, he said.
One officer went to find the man's car and discovered that there was a gun inside, as he had told hospital staff.
