Wellingtonians on the other hand may get to see some morning sunshine. Rain is however expected to creep back over the capital heading into the evening with strong winds and a chance of hail.
"Wellington is actually not looking too bad today. Mostly sunny with southerly winds dying away this morning but will pick up from the west, then as we head into the evening I would expect a strong southerly change to move in with cloud and a few late showers," Mr Wilkinson said.
On Monday rain is expected to remain patchy but should ease off in Auckland but the strong winds look to be staying put. A high of 14C is expected.
"There will still be the odd shower pumping through and winds will be strong from the southwest again and even gusting to gale in the western areas," Mr Wilkinson said.
The west of the North Island can expect brisk winds, cloudy areas and occasional showers during the day. Over on the East Coast things are looking fairly dry however the Wairarapa is expected to catch some showers.
The upper South Island and most of the West Coast can expect sunnier weather with some clouds and breezy winds throughout Monday. Showers and strong winds are expected to hit the East Coast.
