Guilty plea for man who pulled gun on officer

GUILTY PLEA: Kevin Jones

A Masterton man has admitted to threatening to shoot a police officer.

Kevin Stephen Jones, 29, shearer, pleaded guilty to threatening to do grievous bodily harm when he appeared before Judge Chris Tuohy in the Masterton District Court recently.

The court heard previously that on June 1, Jones confronted the officer with a .44 Magnum gun after the officer had been called to a property as a result of a family argument.

Jones told the officer "to get his dog out of the car because he was going to shoot that first and then was going to shoot the officer", the court was told.

As the officer tried to move away to a safe place, Jones continued telling him he was going to shoot him, police prosecutor Garry Wilson had told the court.

"The officer was backed into a corner and had nowhere to go." Jones eventually handed over the gun.

Defence lawyer Louise Elder told the court it was out of character for her client to act in this way and requested an alcohol and drug assessment.

"He is a family man with a full time job.

"He needs time to organise his family finances," Ms Elder told the court .

Judge Tuohy remanded Jones on bail for a pre-sentence report, alcohol and drug assessment and home detention appendix.

He will be sentenced in the Wellington District Court at 9.30am on November 18.
