Japan's intention to join Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks sends a strong message during a time of economic uncertainty, Trade Minister Tim Groser says.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has announced Japan was seeking to join the negotiations for a regional trade deal, which would make it the tenth country to become involved.
Mr Groser today said Japan was a giant of world trade and economic affairs and its intention to join the TPP was of immense significance.
"At a time of uncertainty in the global economy this announcement sends a strong positive message," he said.
Mr Groser said careful discussions were needed over Japan's participation in the talks and he planned to follow up the announcement with his Japanese counterpart, Yukio Edano, at an Apec leaders meeting in Honolulu this weekend.
Deputy Prime Minister Bill English will represent New Zealand at a meeting of TPP leaders to take place in Honolulu today.
