KEY POINTS:
The grieving parents of dead Polish tramper Jacek Grzybowski will be taken to the Rimutaka Forest Park today to see where their son lost his life.
The 28-year-old's body was discovered on Saturday in a log-jammed river in the forest, after being missing for a week.
It was thought he had slipped and fallen down a ravine during a one-day tramp.
Mr Grzybowski's parents arrived at Wellington airport yesterday and Mrs Grzybowski broke down in the arms of priest, Polish ambassador Lech Mastalerz.
Mr Grzybowski's body was flown out of the bush yesterday during a break in the weather and was taken to Wellington Hospital mortuary, where he was formally identified by his employer.
Inspector Simon Perry said last night that Mr Grzybowski's parents were devastated by their son's death.
"They've actually got a lot of support from the local Polish community and that's really who they're with tonight," he told The Dominion Post.
Flatmate Michal Zeglarski met Mr Grzybowski this year in Poland during training for their computer software engineering jobs in New Zealand.
"He really liked the idea of going tramping because at the beginning it wasn't known if he was going to be sent here or to Melbourne and he preferred New Zealand more because of the outdoor activities," he told the paper.
Mr Grzybowski was believed to have been an experienced alpine tramper.
