There was evident pride in Pope and Gray contractors in the installation of Greytown's new north and south entrance signs on SH2 yesterday.
Despite the bad weather, the contractors were impressed with the visibility of the steel-cut signs, especially with the way the detail stood out against the sky from a distance.
Kuranui College art teacher and Greytown sculptor Roger Thompson provided the winning design after the Greytown Community Board held a sign competition in 2013.
The design, 5 metres high, features a historical building, Papawai Marae and a stylised tree to symbolise Arbor Day.
The former sign read: "Welcome to Greytown, where Arbor Day began, 1890".
