Greytown are well poised to take maximum points from their Bidwell Cup senior men's interclub cricket match with Wairarapa College at Greytown tomorrow.
The southerners will resume their first innings on 196-5, having already built a solid 63-run lead over the students.
Providing there are no problems with the weather, the odds are Greytown will look to bat on tomorrow in the hope of increasing their lead substantially within the first hour of play, thereby giving them plenty of time to dismiss Wairarapa College again, and hit up any further runs required for the outright win.
Greytown will be aware, however, that more fight can be expected from Wairarapa College at their second turn at bat, with the key scalps sure to be senior reps Matthew Stringfellow and Daniel Ingham.
Stringfellow was in imperious batting form for Wairarapa in their Chapple Cup win over Horowhenua-Kapiti last Sunday, playing a wide range of his shots in his 94.
It was with the ball that Ingham starred for Wairarapa last weekend, but he is no mug as a batsman either. Indeed a good case could be made for him to be moved into the top order on the rep scene as he doesn't mind the ball coming on to the bat and is generally sound in his shot selection.
Greytown haven't had the use of their main strike bowler, Central Stag Seth Rance, lately but they are in the fortunate position of having good depth in that department, as evidenced by the fact their wickets were shared among five bowlers last Saturday ... medium pacers Blake Lyford, Ben Hodder and Daniel Haxton and spinners Steve Coleman and Nash Patel.
Between them, they will probably have to work harder for their wickets second time round but their combined talents should be enough to lay the foundations for a comfortable victory.
The other senior interclub match tomorrow is between Flight Centre Lansdowne and Red Star at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval (start time 3.30pm) and is part of the More FM Cup Twenty20 competition, so should be an all-action affair.
With batsman of the calibre of Sam Curtis, Henry Cameron, Brock Price and Robbie Speers to call on Lansdowne are well served when it comes to players capable of finding the boundary on a regular basis but Red Star aren't too shabby in that category either. In Jared Watt, they have an allrounder who can belt the ball a country mile and others like Nik Karaitiana and Joe Hull, who can give it a decent nudge as well.
Lansdowne are clearly the form team in all formats of the game this season and will start warm favourites to continue their winning ways but, with Twenty20 being the sort of game that can be decided by one brilliant individual performance, Red Star will be backing themselves for an upset.
