Turkey Red Greytown outgunned Lansdowne by 52 runs in their Cricket Wairarapa Umpire's Cup grand final played at Queen Elizabeth Park oval on Saturday.
Batting first, Greytown were in early trouble at 8-1, 15-2, 38-3 and 45-4 but they were rescued by an 89-run partnership for the fifth wicket between two of their most experienced campaigners, Steve Coleman and Paul Lyttle.
Coleman was a good mix of patience and aggression in making 79 from 123 balls in a knock which included six fours and one six while Lyttle adopted similar tactics, his 38 coming from 60 balls and including three fours. Gordon Reisima kept the momentum going by making 27 in 35 balls and by the time the 50th over had been completed Greytown had reached a respectable 215-8.
Lansdowne used six bowlers and all of them got among the wickets. Calvin Ball was the most successful with 2-41 from his 10 overs and Jock Cameron, Ford Burr, Chris Jefferies, Henry Cameron and Choi Jackson all picked up one wicket apiece.
Chasing 216 for victory Lansdowne were never really in the hunt, thanks to some inspired bowling from Greytown paceman Seth Rance who finished with the excellent figures of 5-18 from 8.2 overs. He got some sharp lift on occasions with one of his deliveries catching Lansdowne batsman James Adamson on the face and causing him to leave the field for repairs.
