The Greytown Bowling Club's opening day took an unusual turn last weekend when a special general meeting was called to precede it.
About two minutes before that meeting commenced a long standing member was quietly advised that he was to be honoured with life membership of a club which he had joined nearly 40 years ago.
Thus Dave Murray learned of the high honour to be bestowed on him,a thoroughly deserved recognition of his contribution to bowls in Greytown and Wairarapa in general.
The motion for life membership was moved by Brian Johnson and seconded by John Manning, both of whom have been teammates of Murray for many years, and it was passed by acclamation.
Murray has been heavily involved in bowls administration, serving Greytown club in the roles of secretary for 11 years, junior and senior vice-president and president for five years.
The Wairarapa Bowling Centre, as it was known in those days, also received some 12 years of his time as a club delegate, match and tournament committee member and a stint as president.
Murray has also hit the high spots as a player. He has 27 club titles, nine centre titles (including a gold star) and he has repped for Wairarapa on numerous occasions, and at various levels. He has also been a regular competitor at club tournaments and there would not be many on which the name of Dave Murray does not appear on the winner's list.
His elevation to life membership of Greytown will be welcomed by the entire Wairarapa bowling fraternity.
Meanwhile Masterton Bowling Club president Warren Wyeth has advised that their No.2 green will be open for play tomorrow afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
