KEY POINTS:
Creating a database of skilled older people - a kind of grey army similar to the Army reserves - is an option for governments planning strategies to use older workers in an ageing workforce, a university study has found.
But employers need to offer more flexible work arrangements in order to attract older people to return to or stay in the workforce, the study reported.
Griffith University lecturer Kate Shacklock and associate dean of Research Liz Fulop, and Australian National University reader Linda Hort, surveyed participants with a mix of employment histories, industries, occupational categories and ages, although all were over 45.
The key finding was the lack of planning by employers to consider older workers as a potential pool of employees.
The study was published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources.
