KEY POINTS:
Police were attending a road crash in Christchurch today when an elderly woman from a nearby house handed over a World War 2 grenade.
The officers left the grenade on the footpath, cordoned the area and called in the army bomb squad from Burnham military camp, south of the city.
Inspector Alan Weston, of the police southern communication centre, said the incident happened about 8.35am after police were called to a crash in Glandovey Rd, Fendalton.
He said the army experts found the grenade was live, but safe because it did not have a detonator.
It was taken away for disposal.
Earlier he said: "An elderly lady came out with it and said her late husband had been in the war, 'here's a grenade, I don't want it any more'.
"We're just waiting for the army bomb disposal squad to help us out with that one."
