Extending a lower speed limit on two Masterton roads has been approved by the Masterton District Council, with support for a New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) plan to restrict speed at the southern end of State Highway 2 and to build a roundabout.
At a meeting on Wednesday the council gave support to extending the 50km/h speed zone south in Chamberlain Rd to end about 400m from the juncture with Upper Plain Rd and on South Rd to take the 50km/h limit to the end of the South Rd Extension. Council officers have been authorised to progress the extensions by consulting with those directly affected, NZTA, police, Wairarapa Automobile Association and the Road Transport Forum.
NZTA controls state highways, but the council has lent its support to extending the 50km/h limit at the southern end of town to the Waingawa Bridge and also plans to build a roundabout at the Ngaumutawa Rd/ Buchanans Rd intersection.
