Wairarapa MP John Hayes has chosen a student with a passion for the environment to represent him at Youth Parliament this year.
Jessica Sinclair, a Year 13 student at Dannevirke High, was one of numerous young hopefuls from around the Wairarapa region who put forward an application, Mr Hayes said.
"I was blown away with the number of young people in the Wairarapa who felt strongly about issues affecting their peers, and wished to be involved in Youth Parliament," he said.
"Jessica captured my attention because of her passion to promote awareness of environmental issues, such as the One Plan, which are topical and extremely relevant to our rural community. I see Jessica as being an advocate for rural youth, and her engagement with the other Youth MPs on environmental and agricultural issues will be a real asset to the Wairarapa community."
Youth Parliament will be held on July 16 and 17 and is an opportunity for youth members to act as MP for the day and debate legislation, sit on select committees and ask oral questions of ministers.
