Great South Rd reopens after person hit and killed by truck in Manurewa

A person has been hit by a truck and killed on Great South Rd in Manurewa this morning.

Police said the pedestrian died at the scene of the crash, which happened between Kevale Place and Mahia Rd, near the Te Mahia train station, just before 6.30am.

The road was reopened just before 10.30am, after being closed for four hours.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

A police cordon was earlier in place from the Mobil service station at Mahia Rd, a Herald photographer at the scene said. It appeared Akarana Timbers truck, in the southbound lane inside the cordon, had been involved in the crash.

Akarana Timbers declined to comment to the Herald.

St John confirmed the person had been killed. Two ambulances were sent to the scene at 6.26am.

Students from nearby Greenmeadows Intermediate said they were unable to get to school as pedestrians were not being allowed through.

While there is a footpath on the eastern side of the road, the footpath is being relaid on the western side where a new development is being built, the photographer said. Pedestrians must walk on the road between a double row of cones in lieu of a footpath.

It was unclear where the pedestrian had been walking when they were hit.

A truck crash was also causing delays further south, on State Highway 1 near Karapiro.
The NZ Transport Agency said a truck had crashed just north of the SH29 junction at Piarere, between Tirau and Cambridge.

Police said a trailer had overturned on SH1, 1km north of the Piarere turnoff.

Motorists were asked to use SH27. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The vehicle has now been recovered and one lane has reopened.
