Splore festival goers tongues are in for a treat at this year's event with organisers promising a fantastic variety of affordable healthy, delicious food.
"We scour the country looking for the very best food vendors to supply the audience at Splore. It's all nutritious, often organic and there's a huge range with anything from Greek, Mexican, vegetarian options and woodfired pizza," says Amanda Wright, Splore's festival director and founder.
Vendors include Bing King which offers Beijing inspired street cuisine. It is healthy, fast and with a taste of China's biggest city yet slightly altered to appeal to Kiwi's tastes. Bing King incorporates sustainability into their everyday business model by using very little packaging and what is used is completely compostable. Bing King's owner Francis Longman collects the waste to compost and uses this in his own vegetable garden. Try the 'Blinged Bing' - a medley of Char Siu sausage, bacon, fresh avocado and tofu.
Another Splore favourite and long-time vendor is Dragonfired. Owner Bevan Kaan was one of the first to build a mobile wood-fired oven in New Zealand and Dragonfired is famous for their wood-fired pizza. They use an organic wheat base (they also have gluten-free options) with fresh herb tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and a choice of toppings such as manuka smoke-cured pepperoni salami or caramelised onions which are slow-cooked in the wood oven.
Dragonfired use predominately local and organic ingredients and serve it simply in a few unbleached paper serviettes for minimal packaging waste.
