The 7-year-old son of the woman who died in a flood-swollen Northland river is living with his great-grandparents, as he comes to terms with losing his mum.
The body of Hutt Valley mother Talia Smith was due to return home to Upper Hutt last night, after being recovered from the flood-swollen Waitangi River on Sunday.
Ms Smith, 28, was swept underwater about 6am on Saturday near Haruru Falls, near Paihia in the Far North. She was returning from her semisubmerged car to a friend's party when she was washed away.
Her grandparents Dick and Kiri Smith, of Featherston, Wairarapa, were looking after her 7-year-old son, Kingston, when Ms Smith was swept away. They learned she was missing on Saturday through Facebook, Dick Smith said.
They looked after Kingston in the school holidays to give Ms Smith "a spell", but hadn't realised that she had gone to Northland.
