The Government is looking at ways it can encourage the taxi industry to take steps to protect drivers from attacks, Transport Minister Steven Joyce says.
Mr Joyce met New Zealand Taxi Federation representatives last night to discuss what action could be taken in wake of the fatal stabbing of Christchurch taxi driver Abdulrahman Ikhtiari on December 5.
He said the installation of safety screens, security cameras and distress buttons was up to taxi companies, but he wanted them to do more.
Mr Joyce said he had asked officials to do a stock take on the taxi fleet to see what safety measures existed.
He had also asked them to look at options to encourage uptake - particularly of security cameras - and the costs involved.
He said he hoped to receive a report in the New Year.
"In the mean time, I urge all taxi companies to reassess their safety measures and take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of their drivers, particularly those driving late at night."
Two teenagers charged with the murder of taxi driver Abdulrahman Ikhtiari have been remanded in custody to December 23.
They were arrested three days after Mr Ikhtiari was found dead next to his cab in Worcester Street, central Christchurch.
