KEY POINTS:
The Government will give $1.5 million towards the clean-up of Patea's contaminated former freezing works site.
The derelict Patea freezing works went up in flames on February 6, forcing the evacuation of about 300 people from their homes for fears of toxic smoke.
A report in May identified asbestos in the ash at the site as well as other toxic chemicals.
Environment Minister Trevor Mallard today said the clean-up was a priority and the Government would contribute $1.5 million - roughly three quarters of the clean-up cost.
"The people of Patea are rightly concerned about this hazardous blight on their town."
He said the Government had already set aside money to investigate contamination at the former works, before the fire, but the blaze meant the clean up needed to be fast tracked.
Mr Mallard said the $2 million clean-up could take 40 weeks.
The project would be managed by local councils, health authorities and the Labour Department.
