KEY POINTS:
Government agencies have recommended lowering driver blood alcohol limits, it was reported today.
The Health Ministry's drug policy team wants the Transport Ministry to take a fresh look at the limit as part of a National Alcohol Action Plan, the Dominion Post reported.
It wants "real and enduring changes" to tackle the effects of heavy drinking.
The Government has announced its intention to introduce a zero alcohol limit for drivers under 20 who do not hold a full licence, but so far it has not moved to change the adult drink drive level.
Agencies including police, ACC and 10 government departments were involved in drafting the plan.
There are no details in it but it suggests the Transport Ministry assess international literature on drink-driving levels and lead a public discussion on the problem.
Transport ministry figures show the number of road deaths involving drink or drugs increased to 128 last year from 109 in 2006.
