A school resource kit to help children survive natural disasters was launched by Civil Defence Minister Rick Barker today.
The kit is fronted by a cartoon dog called Stan and uses role-playing, stories and an interactive CD-ROM to help prepare for and survive tsunamis, earthquakes and floods.
Mr Barker said the "What's the Plan, Stan" kit was funded as part of the $6 million set aside in last year's budget for civil defence public eduction.
International experience showed that when people were aware of the risks the chances of death, injury and trauma were significantly reduced, he said.
Mr Barker cited the experience of one British girl who was able to save herself, her family and others during the Boxing Day tsunami because she knew the warning signs and what to do.
