Sunday's weather provided perfect conditions for a very successful opening of 2006 season of golf at Martinborough.
An early start for the mens final of the shootout saw 19 players head off down number one to find the man who could stay focused, had the nerves of steel and could actually play the game. It was noted that experience and not the lowest handicap was the all important attribute.
1st place going to our own Bill Jones. He was followed by Bruce Herangi (Mahunga),George Rink (Carterton), Terry Fleet (Mahanga),Darren O'Dwyer and Bob Goodley (both Martinborough)
Great effort goes to Syd Whittington 75 years old and still making the cut.
Festival of golf kicked off at 9.30, and was well attended, welcome and good luck to all our new members, great to see so many juniors taking up the game.
A more leisurely start for our members at mid day for the Open Day Ambrose caught some excellent netts
The committee was pleased with the turn out and the mixed draw provided some fierce competition. It was a great opportunity for the mid week crew to play with our weekend counterparts.

1st Di Bunny 46 followed by Denise Lazelle on 44, Jean Laing 44 on Countback, Robyn Blackett 42, Trish Donald 41, and Joanna Wilson on 41.Well done ladies.
The Thursday Club got off to a smashing start this year, partly because of the weather, and partly, it seems, because some parents were ready to flee the house, away from the arigours of the school holidays!!
On the 9th of february there was a slightly smaller turn out thanks to shearing taking precedence, but this didn't sop some very good scoring.
Roger Simpson was nearest the pin and he enhanced that by getting a two as well.
He was joined in the twos by Roger Parkinson, Terry Blacktop,Garth Edwards and Uncle Ivan who went one better, as it were, and scored two twos.
Incidentally, last week Mike Topp scored an eagle on the courses most difficult hole, Bull Hill. His first shot took off over the creek and half was up the hill, his next landing on the green and rolling in. Good Show Mike.
The competition last Thursday the usual stablefords, saw Mr Ed Elworthy blitz the field with a sparkling 46 points, followed three shots back by Roger Parkinson. Bill Jones got his great form back with a creditable 42 points.
Four players scored 40 points: Derek Stephens, Ivan Clarke, Stu Taplin, and Grant Muir.
This Thursday the 16th, will be the first Tournament of the year and a great prize list, thanks to some very generous sponsorship, should see a good turn out. Heres wising the whole club a most sucessful and happy 2006.
Good weather helps season off to top start
