Wairarapa United football coach Phil Keinzley is the first to admit his team's 3-2 win over Napier City Rovers in their central league match at Hullena Park, Masterton on Sunday was far from perfect but he still rates it as the highlight of the 2009 season.
Reason being that Napier City Rovers has long been regarded as one of the most prestigious clubs in the country and Wairarapa United had never tasted success against them at premier level.
"I've always wanted to coach a team which beat them and it's great to get that monkey off the back," Keinzley said.
The win came after NCR scored the opening goal through a defensive blunder and dominated the first 20 minutes of the match, both in terms of possession and territory, and Keinzley agrees a victory looked a long way off at that stage.
"We were doing everything we had talked about not doing, it was pretty average stuff," Keinzley said.
By halftime, however, Wairarapa United had enhanced their effort to the point where they were probably fair value for the Campbell Banks goal which had them level pegging at 1-1 at the break.
And with Banks and fellow striker Seule Soromon leading the way they had control through most of the second half with two further goals from Banks taking them out to a 3-1 lead before NCR scored their second goal just before fulltime.
Keinzley said some hard talking had been done at the halftime break with the onus being put on certain players to show greater commitment to the team cause, and he was delighted with their response.
"You want the players to take responsibility for their own actions and there were a few who weren't doing that," Keinzley said. "But once they got the message they certainly picked things up, and that was good."
This coming Saturday will see Wairarapa United away to Palmerston North Marist who sit two places behind them on the points table. They will be without regular fullback James Oxtoby, who is on a one match suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card on Saturday, but Keinzley says nothing less than a good win would be regarded as acceptable.
Good to get the monkey off my back, says Keinzley
