A STRONG start was the key to success when St Matthews Collegiate beat Carterton Red 51-37 in their Netball Wairarapa premier one match played at the Genesis Recreation Cenytre on Friday night.
St Matthews had the better of the opening quarter and opened up a good lead and while Carterton Red improved as the match progressed they never appeared likely to make up the leeway.
Goal defence Ella Biggs had an outstanding game for St Matthews and Kelly Matthews starred for Carterton Red.
In other premier one games Harcoiurts made no race of their encounter with defending champions Wairarapa College, winning 64-26, Gladstone All Blacks beat Kuranui College 51-23 and Salute Greytown beat Hiona 53-31.

Wairarapa under-17s had mixed results at the Cook Osborne tourney at Paraparaumu yesterday, but coach Robyn Schischka took the opportunity to try out various combinations and was pleased with the way they responded to that challenge.
They started with a 20-25 loss to eventual section winners Hutt Valley, beat Kapi Mana 16-11, lost to Wellington Black 16-24, beat Manawatu development 15-12 and lost to Marlborough 15-17.
