KEY POINTS:
Police say more arrests are likely following the drive-by shooting which left a man dead in the small Waikato community of Waharoa on Sunday.
One man was arrested and charged with assault after Matamata man Desmond Francis Paddy Arahanga, 28, was shot dead outside a McGowan St address.
A rifle was later found near another house set ablaze in nearby Hedley St thought possibly to be a revenge arson.
Today Detective Inspector Peter Devoy said police were making good progress.
"People are co-operating, that is the main thing. We are getting information and we are making progress."
He said people's emotions were running high and the shooting of father-of-two Mr Arahanga was a shock to everyone.
"He was a community man and we have got to remember that today, especially with the tangi progressing.
"He worked in the community and on the Saturday he played in a rugby club final. He was a member of the Matamata Rugby Club so it is fairly close to the community," he told National Radio today.
Some Waharoa residents believed the house was torched in an act of revenge.
Police said people needed to keep calm and give police any details they may have about either incident.
Mr Devoy said it appeared Mr Arahanga was shot after a disagreement with some people at Hedley St.
When he returned to McGowan St a volley of shots was fired from a car, several hitting him.
The car drove off and returned to the McGowan St address soon after and a second volley of shots was fired but no one was hurt.
A 23-year-old man appeared in Hamilton District Court accused of assaulting Mr Arahanga and was remanded in custody without plea.
About 20 police were today still working on the investigation.
