The promoter of a professional wrestling event to be held in Masterton on Friday, August 17 says it will provide "good, family entertainment."
Martin Stirling, manager of operations for Wellington-based New Zealand Wide Pro Wrestling, is adamant the action at Meltdown in the Masterton Town Hall will appeal to kids and adults alike.
"It's not what you could call hard-core wrestling where people might get hit over the head with softball bats, you could see a chair or two thrown around in the ring but that's about it," Stirling said.
"The emphasis for us is on good family entertainment, we want people of all age groups to enjoy their night out."
Stirling, a former professional wrestler himself who often shared the bill with one of New Zealand's greats of the sport in John de Silva, said there would be a fair measure of "serious stuff" in the Masterton event.
"Our wrestlers are not actors, they train very hard for what they do and while there will always be an element of theatre in how they go about things the results do matter for them," he said.
"Like every athlete they like to win."
While the actual card for Meltdown is still to be finalised Stirling anticipates their being between eight to 10 bouts, most of them featuring wrestlers who attend a wrestling academy in the capital.
Two-time NZWPY champion D-Hoya is expected to be one of the leading lights and he could be joined by the man who held that championship for 11 months before losing to D-Hoya, Adam Avalanche.
And then there are other possible starters like Cam Akaze, Nick G'Nore and Tank of Company T, not forgetting their female counterparts, Lady T, Angel of Destruction, Matariki and Misty.
Of them Matariki has an interesting CV, having competed in Sumo wrestling in Japan for over two years.
Good entertainment promised at Meltdown
