The Wairarapa Golf Association was delighted with the success of their junior golf fun day at the Carterton course on Sunday with some 60 youngsters, parents and helpers all enjoying the range of activities.
WGA secretary Colin Hicks said the coaching tips and advice provided by Phil Ackin (Wellington Golf development manager), Jonti Philipson (NZPGA professional) and Ben Campbell (New Zealand junior representative) were particularly well received.
"For some of these children it was their real introduction to golf and judging by their interest it won't be the last time they play the game," Hicks said.
While the North v South match play event in the afternoon was always intended to provide friendly rivalry the participants went at it with the intensity expected and the result came down to the very last match, North winning by 5?pts to 4?pts.
Several of the younger players took the eye, including Katie Smith, Walter Barber, Toby Tuoro, Brayden Mazey and Tony Russo while the battle at the top of the order saw Jeffrey Tuoro (North) edge out Jason van Zanten (South). They were paired with Phillipson and Campbell who had an absorbing struggle too, Campbell taking the honours with a birdie at the 17th. It was Campbell's first outing for some time and indicated a pleasing recovery from his wrist injury.
The North v South match is now destined to become a regular fixture on the Wairarapa golfing calendar.
Results from Sunday, North names first: Ben Campbell beat Jonti Philipson, Jeffrey Tuoro beat Jason van Zanten, Troy Shaw lost to Tony Russo, Brayden Mazey beat Owen Lloyd, Matthew Biel and James Perkinson all square, Toby Tuoro beat Jaiden Mills, George Deans lost to Sean Peerless, Ryan Barham beat Aaron van Zanten, Benjamin Bailey lost to Walter Barber, Ashley-Robyn Howard lost to Katie Smith.
