Masterton bodybuilder Deon Smith successfully launched a world championship campaign with a gold-medal victory that qualified him for the 2014 National Amateur Body Building Association World Fitness Federation (NABBA-WFF) New Zealand nationals.
Smith turned 42 on the day he qualified for the national championships after winning a gold medal in the masters class over 40/90kg plus athletic section at the NABBA-WFF Christchurch Grand Prix on May 17.
He is aiming to compete at the WFF World Championships to be held in Queensland on November 2 and was rapt to make the grade for the Kiwi nationals and world championships qualifier, which will run in Auckland on October 14.
He said his wife and campaign manager, Robyn Omundsen, had been vital to his victory down south and "never misses a beat" regarding his diet and training regime leading up to contests.
He would also compete at the Wellington NABBA-WFF competition in September as part of his build-up to the nationals and was confident of doing well.
