A Bay of Islands grandmother, Lynette Winwood, has become the first Northland woman to collect a gold star for 25 years' service as a volunteer firefighter with the brigade in Okaihau, 34km from Kawakawa.
"I'm just like hundreds of volunteer firefighters around New Zealand working in their communities," she said.
