Firefighters were able to retrieve medals from the Auckland home of a former weightlifting gold medallist after it was badly damaged by fire last night.
Fire services were called to the fire at a home belonging to Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold medallist Tony Ebert on Beach Rd in Campbells Bay, around 8pm.

Firefighters managed to rescue memorabilia belonging to Mr Ebert, including certificates, photos and medals.
Senior Station Officer Shaun Pilgrim said the property was fully ablaze when they arrived.
