KEY POINTS:
Chrysler is going green with three new concept vehicles, each with a different alternative fuel system.
The Chrysler ecoVoyager, Jeep Renegade and Dodge ZEO concepts lay claim to being eco-friendly expressions of familiar Chrysler design themes.
The Renegade concept vehicle is a "minimised" two-seater in the vein of the classic Wrangler. The propulsion system starts with a 40-mile range lithium-ion battery pack. A range extender - in the Renegade's case, a 1.5-litre Bluetec diesel engine - allows for journeys up to 650km.
Chrysler claims the Renegade is capable of achieving four-to-five times greater fuel economy than an equivalent petrol-only vehicle.
The 4WD system also benefits from new technology, with an additional electric motor powering each axle.
The ecoVoyager four-door, four-passenger concept was developed around the idea of supremely comfortable long-distance travel.
The ecoVoyager's front wheels are driven by an electric motor, with power primarily supplied by a lithium-ion battery pack capable of satisfying a consumer's typical daily commute of less than 60km.
The ecoVoyager also takes advantage of a range extender - in this case, a small, hydrogen fuel cell - to extend the vehicle range for longer trips.
Its total range is greater than 480km, while no emissions, except for water vapour, come from the exhaust.
Meanwhile, the Dodge ZEO (Zero Emissions Operation) concept is a four-passenger, all-electric, two-plus-two sport wagon. It has a 64 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack capable of at least 400km. The rear-drive machine can still rocket to 100km/h in less than six seconds.
