KEY POINTS:
Labour leader Phil Goff added the devil of detail to the National Government's formal plans yesterday.
In an unconventional response, Mr Goff moved to amend the Speech from the Throne - adding in the details of promises National made while trying to get elected.
He said these were the "expectations" National had to meet in the next three years.
He said the Labour Opposition would hold them to account on:
- Closing the wage gap with Australia.
- Reducing serious crime, including family violence.
- Reducing waiting times for elective surgery, with 20 new dedicated theatres.
- Fewer people on working age benefits.
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions.
- Increased investment in infrastructure, including rail and road transport.
- No cuts to public services.
- The extension of the fibre-optic network to nearly all homes.
- All 16 and 17-year-olds in education, training or employment.
- Expanded availability of subsidised medicines.
- A police-to-person ratio of 1-500, with all sworn officers committed to frontline duties.
- A doubling of the number of prisoners receiving drug or alcohol
rehabilitation.
- Settling half of the remain historical Treaty settlements.
