KEY POINTS:
An Invercargill college pupil is in hospital with serious leg injuries after crashing a go-kart he took for a joyride.
The 16-year-old pupil was working on the go-kart as part of an engineering workshop of year 12 pupils at James Hargest College when he decided to take the incomplete machine for a spin about 12.15pm yesterday.
He lost control of the kart, which had no brakes, crashing through a mesh fence and on to the footpath. He had to be cut free by emergency services.
The impact broke his right leg, contorting it at a 90-degree angle above the ankle.
"They were left unsupervised to paint the frame and got a little bit carried away," college associate principal Nadia Rose told the Southland Times.
The police serious crash unit is investigating the incident.
