Pupils at Carterton School turned on a spectacular show of wheels for Go By Bike Day yesterday.
Teacher Melanie MacGregor, who manages health leadership at the school, said teachers and about a third of the 338 pupils at Carterton School had pedalled or scootered to the gates in celebration of Go By Bike Day, which was part of Bike Wise month.
"We had exactly 100 staff and students bike to school and about 30 students on scooters. I was only expecting about 50. I'm really impressed and it's great to see kids being active."
Spot prizes of bike bells and water bottles were handed out to students who had used "an alternate mode of transport" to come to school, she said, and to rural students who had cycled from their homes to meet their school bus. Ms MacGregor said the school will "keep the momentum going" next month, which had been dubbed Moving March, to help with the continued encouragement of students "using active modes of transport coming to school".
She was hoping for fine weather for March as the tally day for Moving March last year had been marked with a cloudburst that kept down the number of students cycling and scooting to school that day.
