A pilot has been killed after a motorised glider crashed northwest of Omarama in Otago tonight.
Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman James Sygrove said a witness, who was also gliding in the area, reported the crash at 6.20pm.
The pilot was later found dead at the scene in the Snowy Tops area.
An aircraft with glider-towing capacity and a helicopter with long-line capacity had been searching for the crash site. A search base had been set up at Omarama airport.
The name of the deceased will not be released until next of kin are notified.
