Owen Glenn offered good friend Sir Howard Morrison $1 million to stand as an independent MP.
The crooner revealed the proposition to media outside the expat businessman's 68th birthday party in Auckland on Tuesday night, before he was whisked away by Mr Glenn's public relations manager.
"He offered me a million dollars to stand as a member of Parliament but I turned it down. I felt the entertainment business was enough for me."
The pair met in 2003 when Mr Glenn asked Sir Howard to sing in Las Vegas at the 25th anniversary party of his freight company, OTS Logistics Group.
Yesterday, Sir Howard told the Herald that he and Mr Glenn became friends after the party.
When Mr Glenn came to New Zealand in 2004, he visited Sir Howard and told him he would make a great MP because of his community work.
"I'm quite astute. I've got a good mind. These are his words, not mine," Sir Howard said.
"I could take politics up as an individual rather than a party person. He was impressed with what I was doing in the community."
