Gladstone have won the Shirley Corlett Trophy for being the leading team at the end of pre-Christmas play in the Wairarapa regional one tennis interclub competition, despite having lost one more match than Pirinoa.
A first round loss when they were below full strength had Gladstone on the back foot early in the piece but, with the likes of Wairarapa rep Baden Stevenson returning to the fold after injury, they struck back with big wins in their next three encounters to make up lost ground.
With each singles and doubles win earning teams one point and an extra bonus point being allocated for a 9-0 overall victory, Gladstone finished with 31 points, two ahead of Pirinoa, who won all four of their matches but most of them by narrow margins. Third with 18 points were Masterton, and then followed Opaki, 12, and Martinborough, 10.
