Gisborne woman named as victim in Boxing Day crash on SH35

Emergency services were called to a fatal crash near the Tairāwhiti and Bay of Plenty border, at 11.15am, December 26.

• Police have named the woman who died in a Boxing Day crash as Mere Kohao Madeline McCabe, 39, of Gisborne.
• The crash happened near the Tairāwhiti-Bay of Plenty border on State Highway 35.
• Police are investigating the crash and have expressed disappointment with the high holiday road toll.

The woman who died in a Boxing Day crash on the East Coast’s State Highway 35 was Mere Kohao Madeline McCabe, 39, of Gisborne, police say.

Emergency services were called to the crash about three kilometres west of Lottin Point Rd, near the Tairāwhiti and Bay of Plenty border, at 11.15am, December 26.

“One person was unresponsive when located by emergency services and tragically was unable to be revived,” police said earlier.

Inquiries into the crash are ongoing.

Police have expressed disappointment with the high holiday road toll after attending eight fatal crashes so far where nine people have died.

The Ministry of Transport will be providing updates on holiday road toll data throughout the break.
