Gisborne Police and the Fire Service had not received any call outs for damage related to the earthquake.
GeoNet later revised the quake's strength to a slightly lower magnitude 4.5.
It said the "moderate" quake struck 10km northwest of Gisborne at a depth of 20km.
More than 70 people had reported feeling the quake, with most describing it as light or weak in intensity.
