Gisborne residents woken by two quakes

Gisborne has been rocked by two earthquakes within just a few minutes of each other this morning.

The first, measuring 4.0 in magnitude, struck at 6.50am, GNS Science reported.

It was centred 10km north west of Gisborne and was 25km deep.

The second tremor, just three minutes later, measured magnitude 3.9 and was centred in exactly the same place, GNS said.
