Two children who were home alone when a fire broke out in a bedroom are tonight being housed by family members.
The girls - aged 5 and 9 - managed to call the fire service before escaping the blaze at their home in Serrano Place, Clover Park, in South Auckland. The children were not injured.
Fire staff said they were called to the scene shortly before 10am and found bedrooms at the back of the house blackened and the windows smashed.
It is understood one of the girls made the initial call for help and they were found standing outside the property when authorities arrived.
Papatoetoe senior station officer Bob Morrison praised the children's quick-thinking actions.
