KEY POINTS:
A 13-year-old girl died after falling off the back of a car packed with young people near Whakatane night.
A police spokesman said the car's driver was 16-years-old, and the vehicle had been carrying nine occupants.
The girl - named this afternoon as April Te Uira Taylor Hiko-Reha, of Waimana - had been riding on the back with others when the vehicle swerved, causing her to fall off and land on the road.
The accident happened about 6pm yesterday near Waimana, 27km south-east of Whakatane.
Whakatane police sergeant Andrew O'Reilly said police were still investigating the crash.
The teenager was one of four people killed on the country's roads over the weekend.
One person died after a single-vehicle crash at Mangatawhiri, near Pukekohe, last night.
A motorcyclist died after crashing through a fence in Ruakaka, near Whangarei, at 9pm on Friday.
No further details were available about either accident.
A 49-year-old man died when his motorbike and a van carrying three German tourists collided in South Otago yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Lane Todd, of Balclutha police, said the two collided on the Owaka-Papatowai road, about 40km south-west of Balclutha, at 11.30am.
He named the dead man as Jan Zeedijk, who had been travelling with his wife and friends on a motorcycle tour.
