KEY POINTS:
The parents of a 12-year-old Hastings girl who told police she was raped after a school dance thought she was staying with relatives.
The girl told officers she was attacked as she walked through the grounds of a primary school on Saturday night.
She had been at a "krumping" dance display in a central carpark and was allegedly raped as she walked to a relative's house. Her parents did not know she was out.
The girl said she became separated from friends and disoriented after leaving the display of krumping - a high-energy dance craze - about 10.30pm, and ended up in the school grounds.
Two men waiting for a taxi found her in a distressed state at 2.15am.
Detective Sergeant Mike Foster yesterday said police were "no further ahead" in the investigation.
"We're just talking to various witnesses and the like," he said.
He said CCTV footage from the carpark had provided no clues to the identity of the alleged rapist, described as a Maori in his mid-teens. It was still unknown if he was at the dance.
Police had spoken to the girl and were working through the interview transcripts.
Asked if police thought the rape complaint was genuine, Mr Foster said: "We're still trying to work through that as well. At this stage, we're certainly treating it as genuine."
He said the girl was traumatised and in shock and was resting at home with her family.
Her alleged attacker was wearing a white krumping shirt with a blue-and-black design and jeans. He had shaggy, shoulder-length hair with a rat's tail.
