A 13-month-old girl was killed after she was run over in a driveway in west Auckland yesterday.
A family member ran over the girl shortly after midday in Waitakere, Detective Sergeant Megan Goldie said.
The girl was rushed to hospital but was not able to be saved, she told NZPA.
The family was taking it hard, she said.
"They just can't sort of understand how it's happened. Just the whole, the loss, you know, it's impossible to sort of understand it really," Ms Goldie said.
The police serious crash unit was investigating and the coroner had been informed, Ms Goldie said.
Yesterday a 43-year-old cyclist died after crashing in Christchurch's Port Hills.
The man probably lost control around a sharp bend at the Mt Cavendish scenic reserve carpark, below the Christchurch Gondola Restaurant, said acting Senior Sergeant Richard Scott of Lyttelton police.
"There are some rocks around the carpark there and his bike has hit the rocks which has caused him to probably go over the handle bars, by the look of things, and he's landed on some rocks," he told NZPA.
Mr Scott said the man was biking with three friends.
"I can imagine they're pretty shaken up because according to the guys who attended it was a pretty nasty scene."
It was likely the man was a keen cyclist based on the gear he was using, Mr Scott said.
Police said the girl's death would contribute to the weekend's road toll but the cyclist's death was less clear as it happened in a carpark.
A motorcyclist died in Warkworth, north of Auckland, about 5.30pm on Friday after colliding with a car, shortly before the weekend road toll period started at 6pm. It runs until 6am Monday.
