She may be just 10, but Carterton schoolgirl Hannah Baxter is getting a taste of democracy first-hand.
Hannah made the only submission to a proposed bylaw by the Carterton District Council that will ban skateboarders, scooters and roller skaters from using the footpaths in the town centre.
She's failed in her protest - the ban will go ahead - but her initiative impressed councillors who this week received the submission.
Hannah's submission said: "With regards to the notice in the paper 26.7.05 about skateboards, roller skates and scooters and similar devices, bylaw 2005. I think it is not a good idea. It is so ridiculous. I am appalled.
"On Fridays at Carterton School we have scooter and skateboard days and I, Hannah Baxter and other kids have to go on High Street to get to school. If you do this, it won't be a fun life for kids and me."
