An 11-year-old girl narrowly avoided serious internal injuries when she was impaled on a fence post in a small Waikato town this afternoon.
The girl was impaled in the stomach after accidentally falling on the stake in Mangakino around 12.15pm.
However, she escaped serious injury in the incident as the post "didn't go in that far'', the Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter said.
The girl was able to walk when the rescue chopper crew arrived, it said.
She suffered moderate injuries and was flown to Rotorua Hospital for treatment.
