Girl, 9, abducted from street, police say

A 38-year-old man is facing abduction and indecent assault charges after a nine-year-old girl was snatched off a Christchurch street and sexually attacked at the weekend.

Police spokeswoman Maggie Leask said the incident happened on Sunday when the girl was abducted from Portman St, in the Christchurch suburb of Woolston.

A 38-year-old man appeared in Christchurch District Court today charged with abduction and indecent assault and was remanded.

Detective Sergeant Tony Hill said no one else was being sought in relation to the incident.
