An 8-year-old girl was hit by a car on State Highway 1 today after the car she was in pulled over so the occupants could take photos north of Kaikoura.
Police said the girl was taken by ambulance to Kaikoura Hospital and was expected to be flown to Wellington Hospital today.
The car stopped in a 100km/h section of the highway about 1.30pm today so the occupants could take photographs, police said.
Police said the girl went to run across SH1 and was struck by a passing vehicle.
No one else was injured in the crash, but the driver of the vehicle was being treated for shock, police said.
