A six-year-old girl has been taken to hospital with critical injuries after being struck by a car in west Auckland.
The girl was crossing Great North Road with her grandmother in the Auckland suburb of Henderson shortly after 11am today.
She suffered head injuries, described as critical and possibly life threatening, said Inspector Lou Alofa, of the northern police communications centre.
She has been taken to Starship hospital for treatment.
The road is closed while police examine the scene and diversions have been set up.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
