KEY POINTS:
An 18-year-old girl died at a party in Mt Maunganui last night.
Police made five arrests at the "drunken" party after they were called to the scene but said they were not treating the girl's death as suspicious.
She had been involved in a "small altercation" shortly before collapsing in the front yard of a house in Korowai St.
But Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier this morning said the dispute was only verbal and did not involve weapons.
"There is nothing at this stage considered suspicious," he said.
Ambulance officers were the first at the house after the girl, from Edgecumbe, collapsed. They performed CPR but they were unable to revive her and she died at the scene.
When police arrived at about 8.30pm they found 40 to 50 teenagers who they described as a "disorderly, drunken rabble".
Five people were arrested for a variety of offences, including assaulting police, disorderly behaviour and breach of the peace.
The party was brought under control and the scene locked down. Cordons remained in place this morning.
A scene examination was due to take place.
