A 13-year-old girl has been seriously injured in a hit and run in Whangarei.
Police said the teenager was crossing First Avenue with three other girls when she was struck by a car that drove from a dead end on the street.
She was taken to hospital with a possible broken ankle and dislocated kneecap.
The car, which appeared to have three male Maori occupants aged in their late teens or early twenties, did not stop, police said.
It was described as a red four-door vehicle manufactured by either Toyota or Nissan.
"It appeared to have three male Maori occupants, aged in their late teens or early 20s. It was also described as being dirty."
The car had driven from the dead-end area of the street towards Central Ave, police said.
